Hurley Community Development, Inc.

History

Hurley Community Development, Inc. began in 1995 as a group of low-income residents who came together in a local park to discuss their community, its needs, and the changes they would like to see within it. The group eventually began working with the Appalachian Regional Commission as one of the communities selected to participate in the Appalachian Community Learning Project (1996-1997).

Hurley Community Development, Inc.'s project for the program was an environmental cleanup initiative that is still the cornerstone of the organization. The group's environmental efforts led to changes in local ordinances for garbage collection resulting in mandatory garbage collection at affordable cost for residents of Buchanan County.

HCD, Inc. has continued to expand as needs are recognized and resources to fill those needs are maintained.
